Nothing More.
The
In Depth Band Biography
They say talent is handicapped by age, but surely then, Nothing More. is an
exception. The young band members, ranging from age 15-18, have been hard at
work for the better part of 4 years composing and writing music.
Guitarist, Josh Kercheville, and Drummer, Jonny Hawkins, met through a mutual
friend at a Jam Session in late 1999. Then 12 years old and with 4 years of
guitar playing experience under his belt, Josh Kercheville knew that he and
Jonny had musical chemistry. "The music we were making was laughable, but
what can you expect… All I knew was that Jonny was the most amazing drummer
I'd ever heard." From this point, Josh and Jonny formed a friendship and
parted their young band to pursue a more serious project. Josh Kercheville, who
had originally been the singer as well as guitar player, resigned his position
as vocalist to better benefit the band. After months and months of writing,
Jonny finally met another guitar player/singer, Mark Vollelunga. The trio formed
an even stronger bond and found that their diverse interests and writing styles
came together in what has formed Nothing More.'s sound.
With Mark on vocals/guitars, Josh on guitars, and drummer Jonny Hawkins, the
band lacked only one element - a bassist. "We must have spent an entire
year searching the earth for a bassist." explains Josh, "After the
longest time of searching we didn't even care if he could be our friend or fit
our style; we just wanted someone who could play." Some temporary bassists
fell through, until they found an amazing bassist. "His main inspiration
was Flea, so there ya go… he wanted to solo and slap the whole time. I don't
even know if he had any idea of what he was doing, but it sounded good... most
of the time." This bassist lasted quite some time until the stretch of
events, from not fitting in the band "family," to money problems,
broke down and the bassist was fired. The never-ending search continued for many
months. In the mean time, Mark decided that he should give up being lead vocals
to concentrate on his guitar work. Mark, Jonny, and Josh created many of Nothing
More.'s songs during this time period. With music ready for the stage all the
band needed was someone to play and sing the parts.
"I should have asked around school from the beginning, but I didn't know
any stand-out musicians." says Josh, "I asked one of my close friends
(then known as Matt Reynolds) if he knew any bass players. He told me that he
had just started, but at this point I didn't think that a beginner could cut it.
He insisted on trying out for the longest time; meanwhile, I was trying to
convince another bassist to give Nothing More. a shot." Eventually Matt
Reynolds got his audition set, and he impressed the band members with his
obvious talent and passion portrayed even as a beginner. Now called Fro for
obvious reasons, the newly inducted band member started catching up right away.
Practically overnight Fro drastically improved his bass skills and became
familiar with Nothing More.'s songs.
Soon after Fro's induction the band became temporarily finalized with the
addition of a new singer, Andrew. Only a month or two after Fro and Andrew
became official band members the group started gigging. One of their first, and
biggest, and obviously most memorable shows was on June 22, 2002 at the Hill
Country Battle of the Bands. New to the local music scene, Nothing More. was an
unknown and unexpected act. At the end of the night, Nothing More. was announced
the winner and walked away with free recording time, radio airplay, and more.
Recording came soon thereafter, their 3 song demo included Jetta, a crowd
favorite, Simple Sign, one of their newer tunes at the time, and Watch &
Learn, an aggressive song full of meaning. After the recording session ended the
band was not satisfied with their below par vocals. "Andrew had a real
unique voice, it had a lot of potential, but things just didn't work out in the
time we had with him." explains Mark. The band and Andrew parted ways on
good terms.
The search for a singer followed. The band tried out vocalist after vocalist for
months. "It seemed like forever since we had played anywhere, so we got
this ingenious idea to promote our search for a singer by playing instrumental
shows. But nothing came of that. We were all really bummed." Just when
nothing was looking up for the band, Josh called Andrew for a friendly chat.
Andrew raved about a guy he had seen singing in a coffee shop. Josh got this
guy's information from Andrew, only to realize that this singer, Josh Klause,
went to Jonny's school.
Jonny immediately talked to Josh Klause and set up an audition date. The band
was amazed with his voice and power. On December 31, 2001, a time for new
beginnings, the band got their new start with a full lineup including new
vocalist Josh Klause. According to, "Everyone who heard the rookie seemed
to have only good things to say. We immediately started getting ready to start
gigging again." When the band took to the stage once more, the crowd's
reaction was one of great approval. Nothing More. started saving their gig
proceeds to fund another recording session.
Finally the band with their newfound singer entered the studio. The rookie broke
out his vocal pattern, backups and harmonies for the 3-song demo in only a
couple hours. This time, Nothing More. was stunned and excited about their new
demo. They released the demo to the public on March 31, 2003.
